For the last couple of months I have been out in Australia, where the weather is backwards, Christmas is hot and golf in January must be played either early or late to escape the high temperatures. But I am not complaining. Better than not having the option to play at all as a result of bitterly cold temperatures and snow covered fairways.
But as the year progresses, this will all change and golfers across the nation will dust off their kit and return to their favourite past time. Except this year is a little different than previous years. This year money is a little tighter, our situation a little less secure. For many people there will be less golf played this year.
To these people I say this: in such times more than ever we need past times to raise our spirits; wagers must be won against both friends and enemies; competitive urges must be followed and balls must be lost. Golf offers us the chance to escape our troubles, if only briefly, and look back on better times and think of the better times to come.
